Whole Wheat Rotis with extra fiber and protein

Whle wheat roti or pulka

Roti made with whole wheat flour is one of the healthy diets in India and is also a staple food in northern India. Whole wheat flour contain good amount of dietary fiber which helps to reduce constipation, lowers blood cholesterol and helps you in losing weight. Here I mention the idea of using wheat bran and wheat germ as ingredients to get extra fiber, protein and minerals. We can apply little oil or ghee on rotis while cooking to get softer rotis and to maintain softness even after a day of making to consume later. But pulkas without oil made on tawa and direct fire should be consumed immediately for better texture.

Makes: 4 Rotis

Ingredients:

  1. Wheat Flour- 1 cup + 2Tbsp( for dusting)
  2. Unprocessed wheat bran – 2 tbsp
  3. Wheat germ – 2 tbsp
  4. Water –  ½ to ¾ cup

Method:

  1. Mix all the dry ingredients and add water little by little to make smooth dough. Cover it with lid and leave it for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat griddle (an iron pan works well) on medium high.
  3. Make medium lime size balls with dough, roll each ball into thin circle by dusting wheat flour when needed
  4. Place each circle on griddle and cook until roti turns light brown on the skillet side ( you can add little oil before turning the roti). Slide roti with your fingers/spatula, and quickly flip to brown the other side (about 1-2 minutes, apply oil other side). Remove from griddle and keep it an hot pack while you prepare the rest.
  5. Do the step 3 to 4 with all of your dough.
  6. Serve with any curry of your choice.

Its a good idea to use wheat bran and germ. Even if we buy whole wheat, we are not sure how much bran they include in the flour. This way we get max nutrition. Good work!!!!
