Challa Charu ~ Spicy Buttermilk

"Challa Charu"

Challa charu or Majjiga pulusu is an authentic South Indian recipe of  spiced thick buttermilk or Kadhi(In Hindi). Flavors or spices varies upon  region. We can use vegetables such as Snake guard, Spinach, Onion or  bottle guard as an ingredient with this Recipe.  In this post I am going to describe just the mustard and garlic flavored recipe which is most popular where I grew up.

Ingredients:

  • Sour Curd / Plain Yogurt – 4 Cups ( I used low-fat yogurt)
  • Fresh Mustard Powder – 1 tsp
  • Green Chilli – 2
  • Garlic- 2 cloves`
  • Salt – 1 tsp (adjust)
  • Oil- 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Dry Red Chilli – 1
  • Turmeric – 1/4 tsp
  • Curry Leaves – 5
  • Coriander leaves – To garnish

Method:

  1. Beat Curd
  2. Coarsely grind green chilli and garlic.
  3. Add green chilli, garlic paste, mustard powder, salt to curd and mix properly.
  4. Heat oil in a small pan on medium heat for popu/tadka.
  5. When the oil is hot, add dry red chilli, mustard and cumin seeds.
  6. When the mustard seeds are spluttering , add turmeric and curry leaves and Switch off the stove.
  7. Add popu (step 6 ingredients) to curd and mix well. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve this challa charu with rice.
